Archaeology Camp – “The Big Dig: Ancient Greece”
Dates: August 5 – 9
Age: Five years and up.
This year’s Big Dig goes back to ancient Greece. We will ambitiously discover Greek history from the Late Bronze Age all the way to the end of the Turkish period (1000 BC – 1820 AD). The development of the idea of “Greece” will be a focus. The search begins in mythology and literature: Jason and the Golden Fleece, Homer and Troy, Hesiod and the great Archaic Period writers, poets, philosophers, and scientists. We will study the culture, history, and geography of the Aegean region to identify the central themes and events of this period in Greek prehistory and early history. The site will include remains from Eliki, in the Northern Peloponnese, from which the artifacts come. This will be a serious and fun introduction to the idea of Greece. Campers will participate in games, lectures, excavations, and analyses to enhance their perception of what we today call “Greece.” The full-day program will involve orientation, excavation, artifact processing, games, and lecture. Half-day students will have orientation and excavation. On Friday, August 9, a potluck lunch with a Greek theme will accompany an exhibit of the excavators’ finds at the Academy, which completes the camp. Campers must dress for the weather and for digging. Bring your own lunch, snack, and drink. Rain or shine. This camp is as close to Greece as you are likely to get without an actual visit. The instructor, Geoffrey Purcell, has been there dozens of times and has excavated at Eliki. You can reach him at firstname.lastname@example.org
Fee: $250 for the full-day camp for those seven years of age and older (10 am-4 pm); $150 for the half-day (10 am-12:30 pm for five and six-year-olds.)
